FHP: Drunk Driver Hits Motorcycle, Kills Two

Riverview, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A drunk driver caused a crash that killed two people riding a motorcycle Friday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Benson Craig Johnston, 34, tried to make a turn from southbound US-301 onto Johanna Ave. at about 9:35 p.m. and pulled into the path of a motorcycle with two people aboard, state troopers said.  The collision threw both of them into the roadway. The rider of the motorcycle, Kerry Jason Webb, 37, died at the scene. His 25-year-old female passenger, whose name the FHP had not released, suffered critical injuries died later at an area hospital.

After the crash, troopers said that Johnston walked to his home on nearby Lake St. Charles Blvd., where Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies found him and brought him back to the accident scene.

Troopers arrested him on charges of DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, and felony DUI - 4th conviction, and took him to the Orient Road Jail, according to a news release. The FHP kept northbound lanes of US-301 closed for about seven hours as they investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
